A Quick Rant About Spam (The Lazy Man's Guide)

Spam, spam, spam. NOT AGAIN!!! Always like that. They swarm onto your email like flies onto rotting food if you don't have protection. SPAM!!! Now it's used as a threat. "You don make me or i spam your email!!" (Oxford translation: You irritate me, you pay. I will spam your email.) As always, those are empty threats, but the poor victim is SO (insert any word you like here) scared he/she doesn't bother the other guy again. Works every time I say. You open your email. You've got mail...1 good email and 99 spam ones. As always. As usual. Somehow, it's always like that. You accidentally open a spam email. Congratulations!! Spyware/adware/virus/malware/trojan horse has found a new home!! (ok, maybe not so good...) So which leads me to my point. STUPID SPAM!!!

An Unexpected Turn Of Events (Assignment)

The start of French class this year was WEIRD. For instance, no one even knew whether 3rd Language started on 2nd January or not. As school started on a Wednesday, everyone was asking each other about 3rd Language class. I was convinced that there was no 3rd Language class that day. But then...

Halfway during my lunch at home, I received a call from my friend. My jaw dropped when I heard that there was 3rd Language class on that day! I live in Pasir Ris but the Ministry Of Education Language Centre (MOELC) is in Bishan!! I hastily put on my uniform and went to MOELC. At that point, bad luck struck again. I knew my class but I did not know where the room was. To make matters worse, the queue for information about the classes stretched from there to Malaysia. (Well, almost!!) I saw my friend and we headed for the General Office.

When we made it to class, we were late. Very late. This was a screw-up to top all screw-ups. We were 25 minutes late. My teacher joked that we owed him $2000 for every minute late, so we owed him $50 000 !! He said after that, "Just kidding," and I slunk into a chair. cheeks burning. I tried to keep a low profile after that. What a bad start to the year!!

School Hols (Assignment)

(Scenery at Mount Kinabalu)

(Me on the boat to Mamutik Island)

Last holidays, my family and I went to Kota Kinabalu. For the uninitiated, Kota Kinabalu is the capital of the Malaysian state of Sabah. On 30th November, the SilkAir Airbus touched down on the quiet, humble airport of Kota Kinabalu. I was surprised at its simplicity of the airport, vaguely resembling a mini shopping mall. We entered the city of Kota Kinabalu with our tour guide.

I was struck at how much Kota Kinabalu resembled Singapore. The city was small, but it contained a large variety of shops, even though there were only a handful of shopping centres. There was also a bazaar and shops facing out to sea. We stayed in the Berjaya Palace Hotel. The first time I saw it, I was reminded of a Rook, the chess piece, standing majestically upright, a hundred times its normal size.

The next day, we went to Mount Kinabalu, Sabah’s main attraction. Mount Kinabalu, at 4095 metres, is the highest mountain in Southeast Asia. On the way, our tour guide gave us some insight into the culture of the inhabitants of Sabah. (aka, the HEADHUNTING tribe! Nice welcome...) The temperatures on Mount Kinabalu were a big drop from the temperatures at sea level. At sea level, the days were sweltering hot, whereas temperatures on Mount Kinabalu could reach 10 degrees Celsius.

We visited other places, including Mamutik Island off the coast of Sabah, where we went snorkeling. The island was small, smaller than Pulau Ubin, but we had fun swimming and resting at the beach. The waves were strong, so when we tried to sit down in the sea we were knocked aside like bowling pins. I saw many types of fish there, and enjoyed myself thoroughly.

We were disappointed when we had to leave Kota Kinabalu on the 5th of December. My parents reassured us that it wasn’t so bad as we still had the fond memories. Now that I’m writing this blog entry, I agree with them fully.
Below is the video I took of the sunset at Tanjung Aru beach. Watch it and you may want to visit Kota Kinabalu, Sabah.

(Yes, the sunset was so fast and beautiful I could record it!!)

An Outing With Cousins (Assignment)

(My cousins at Swensen's)

(Look at all that food!!!)

30th December, 2007.
That date I will remember, and for a rather sweet reason, too. On that date, my cousins, all 28 of us, went out for a family gathering. At first, we were supposed to have the gathering at Al Kafe, my uncle's newly-opened restaurant. We were expecting a fun afternoon but we were in for a pleasant surprise. Our cousins changed the rendezvous to Swensen's! However, our plan nearly crashed around our ears when we went to Swensen's and found out that they did not accept reservations! Luckily for us, we found ourselves seats and started ordering...and eating...and ordering...and eating. My cousins and I really ate. As more and more of my cousins arrived, we ordered more and more and...you get the picture.

We ate so much that our supposed "lunch" lasted until 5pm!! As my cousin, Hasjmy, puts it, "we ate enough for lunch , dinner and tomorrow's breakfast". To top it all off, we ordered 2 Giant Earthquakes as dessert. To our shock, our cousin, Izzah, offered to foot the whole bill by herself! Now that's what I call generous! (I think it burned a BIG hole in her wallet!)
